Earth Wind & Fire Info
One of the greatest R&B acts of all time, Earth, Wind & Fire combined soaring vocals, layers of funky rhythms and a positive lyrical outlook to forge an instantly recognizable sound. The brainchild of Chicago session drummer Maurice White, the band became one of the most successful groups of the '70s, and its influence continues to be felt in the world of soul.
Formed in 1969 (originally as the Salty Peppers), Earth, Wind & Fire began life as a jazz-funk ensemble. It wasn't until 1972, when a major line-up reshuffle brought vocalist Philip Bailey into the fold, that the soulful, more pop-oriented sound of the group's classic years began to take shape. By the mid-'70s, Earth, Wind & Fire seemed unstoppable; the group scored hit after hit (repeatedly crossing over onto the pop charts in the process), thanks to Bailey's heavenly falsetto and White's ace songwriting. As a measure of the group's success and popularity, by the late '70s, Earth, Wind & Fire was the only black group to appear in Robert Stigwood's all-star film rendition of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. (The film was terrible, but the group acquitted itself nicely with a funky cover of "Got To Get You Into My Life.")
By the early '80s, Earth, Wind & Fire was beginning to sound burned-out. In the face of declining record sales, White split up the group, only to reform it (again with Bailey, who'd had a moderately successful solo career in the interim) in 1987. The group's newest records have been hit-and-miss affairs, with White seemingly unsure whether to chase new musical trends or ignore them entirely. Hopefully, In The Name Of Love, their newest, will capitalize on the current vogue for "old-school" sounds and give Earth, Wind & Fire a chance to once again rule the charts.
