Tropical cult singer Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas Day, 1946 in Pascagoula, Miss. He grew up in Mobile, Ala., where he attended a Catholic high school. A distant cousin of billionaireWarren Buffett, Jimmy went on to major in history at the University of Southern Mississippi,where, not surprisingly, he was a popular fraternity member.
After college, Buffett moved to Nashville hoping to become a country singer; besides playing original solo material, he also worked with a cover band called the Now Generation and wrote for Billboard magazine. Buffett landed his first record contract in 1970 with the small Barnaby Records label, who released his folk-country debut, Down to Earth, later that year; unfortunately the album failed to produce a hit and went largely unnoticed.
In the early '70s, Buffett moved to Key West where he adopted his easy-going, beachcomber persona. Under this new guise, Buffett signed acontract with ABC-Dunhill, releasing his major-label debut, White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean in 1973. With playful songs like "Why Don't We Get Drunk (AndScrew)," Buffett quickly gained a loyal following of party-ready fans who enjoyed the laid-back, tropical atmosphere of his live shows. Soon people began wearing Hawaiian shirts and similar gear to his shows, even in the dead of winter, and his followers, knownas "Parrotheads," began traveling to Buffett concerts Grateful Dead-style and performingspecial "fin" maneuvers during his songs.
Jimmy Buffett broke into the mainstream with his sixth album, 1977's Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, containing the enduring party standard "Margaritaville."His 1978 follow-up, Son of a Son of a Sailor, featured his second well-known track,"Cheeseburger in Paradise." Both albums went gold, and brought Buffett thousands ofnew fans.
Buffet's concerts continued to draw tens of thousands of fans, and in the late '80s the crafty singer capitalized on his beach-bum image with several books, a chain of clubs, a line of beach clothing, and his own Margaritaville custom recordlabel.
He currently lives, appropriately enough, in Palm Beach, Fla., where he is an avid sailor and pilot, and an outspoken environmental activist. Backed by a changing cast ofback-up musicians known as the Coral Reefer Band, Buffett remains one of the biggest-grossing concert draws to this day.
His most recent album, Beach House on the Moon, was released in the spring of 1999.
