Many people first discovered Josh Groban via the 2001 season finale of Fox TV's Ally McBeal, on which he played a shy, nerdy misfit who asks Ally to his high school prom (where, naturally, he breaks into song and wows the student population with his angelic voice). Yet in real life, the 21-year-old classical crossover singer has become a bona fide heartthrob who'd never have trouble getting a date. Since 1998, when at age 17 the boyishly handsome, Los Angeles-based baritone singer was introduced by his vocal coach to Grammy-winning producer/arranger David Foster, his phenomenal career has been on the rise, resulting in a huge fanbase of adoring devotees who call themselves "Grobanites."
Things quickly fell into place for young Groban after he hooked up with Foster, as that fateful meeting led almost immediately to a last-minute performance at an inaugural program for California Governor Gray Davis. This was followed by career-making appearances on Ally, Oprah, The Tonight Show, The Today Show, Rosie O'Donnell, Larry King Live, and other TV shows, including a profile on ABC's 20/20 that created a major spike in sales for his Foster-produced, self-titled debut album. He later duetted with Welsh opera singer Charlotte Church at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics' closing ceremony, which was watched by more than 1 billion people worldwide, and starred in his own PBS special as part of the Great Performance series.
Looking at Groban's impressive résumé, it seems he was always destined for superstardom. Yet ironically, he fell into showbiz almost by accident, signing up for his school vocal group in the seventh grade simply because his friends had joined. However, he later began taking his singing seriously, appearing in several musical theater productions in the Interlochen Arts Program and eventually getting selected for Carnegie Mellon College's musical theater department. Groban chose not to accept Carnegie Mellon's offer, however, as Warner Bros. Records made him an offer around the same time that he could not refuse: an exclusive recording contract.
After making his recording debut singing "For Always" with Lara Fabian on the A.I. movie soundtrack and appearing on Ally, Groban entered the studio with his mentor David Foster and such special guests as Charlotte Church and the Corrs to work on his first full-length; the album, which included songwriting credits by Richard Marx, Albert Hammond, Carole Bayer Sager, and Mariah Carey's former songsmith Walter Afanasieff, was released in November 2001, and (thanks to all his TV exposure) Groban soon became an international sensation, fully crossing over from the opera/classical markets to the pop market as only Charlotte Church, Andrea Bocelli, and Sarah Brightman had successfully accomplished in the past. A year later, Groban followed up with a live album simply called Josh Groban In Concert, which was accompanied by a concert DVD by the same title.
