The Anaheim Angels is a professional Major League Baseball team. The team is based in Anaheim, California. The team is a part of the four member team in the Western Division of the American League. The team gets its name from its place of formation Los Angeles. The team was formed in 1961 under the American League expansion program. The team was earlier known as Los Angeles Angels from 1961 to 1965, California Angels from 1965 to 1996. The team was the brainchild of Gene Autry in 1961, as the Los Angeles Angels and played their first five seasons in Los Angeles. The Angels first season was played at Wrigley Field. After the 1965 season the club moved to Anaheim and became the California Angels. The team played its home games at Dodger Stadium from 1962 to 1965 until it moved to Anaheim Stadium in 1966. In May 1996, the team owner ship changed hands and was bought by the Walt Disney Company and renamed the Anaheim Angels before the 1997 season began. In 2002 the team acquired acquired front-line starters Kevin Appier through a trade with the New York Mets for Mo Vaughn and Aaron Sele. In May 2003, the team ownership again changed hands, this was for the first time that a team was bought by a Hispanic, The Walt Disney Company sold the team to Arturo Moreno.
