Braves Info

The Atlanta Braves is a professional Major League Baseball team. The team is based in Atlanta, Georgia. The team is one of the five teams playing in the Eastern Division of the National League. The team was earlier known as Boston Braves from 1912 to 1952, Milwaukee Braves from 1953 to 1965. Before the 1910 decade the team had many unofficial names "Red Stockings" in the 1870s and 1880s; "Beaneaters" in the 1890s and early 1900s; "Doves" and "Rustlers". In 1935 the team ownership changed hands and the team was bought by Bob Quinn, who asked for suggestions for a new name for the team. The sportswriters suggested "Bees", but it never caught on. Once again in 1941 the team was renamed "Braves". The team played its debut game on April 22, 1876, scoring two runs in the ninth inning to beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 6-5. The game was attended by a crowd of 3,000. After spending seventy-seven years in Boston, and thirteen in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Braves moved to Atlanta to begin the 1966 major league baseball season. In the 70s decade the team ownership changed hands and the team was bought by media tycoon Ted Turner. Ted bought the team from the Atlanta-LaSalle Corporation for $11 million. The manager of the team was Bobby Cox for the 1978 season and has served as the manager from 1978-1981 and 1990-2000. He led the team to eight division titles, five NL pennants, and one World Series championship. The team created history in 1990 by becoming the first team ever to reach the World Series just one season after having baseball's worst record. In 1991 the team captured the division title in October, after an eight game streak of which the first six were on the road. The matches had an attendance of 2,140,217. In the series the most valuable players award went to Steve Avery. In 1998 series the team was again in news after winning 106 games and its seventh straight division title. The team has won 11 division title, four National Association pennants, seventeen National League pennants and three World Series championships. The home ballpark is Turner Field in Atlanta. The stadium was opened in March 29, 1997 and has a seating capacity of 50, 000. This giant stadium was built at a cost $235 million.
