The Tampa Bay Devil Rays is a professional Major League basketball team. The team is based in St. Petersburg, Florida. The team is a member of the Eastern Division of the American League. In 1995 a meeting was held at the West Palm Beach, Florida and Major League Baseball owners officially welcome the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks as the 13th and 14th expansion teams in Major League history. The Devil Rays was the first team to be added in the American League after two decades. The last time any team joined was the Mariners and Blue Jays, which were joined the league in 1977. The first two managers to join the team were Tom Foley, and Bill Evers. The inaugural season for the team was not a satisfying one as the team finished last in the Eastern Division. The team drafted their first baseman Paul Wilder. The Rays eventually select 97 players, the fifth highest total ever taken in the 32-year history of the June draft. The team has failed to give any good results since its formation. The head coach of the team was former Florida Marlins pitching coach Larry Rothschild. The team’s most memorable game was in 1999 when Wade Boggs homered for his 3,000th hit on August 7, 1999 in Tropicana Field. In the following season the team managed to win 69 games and finishing last for the third straight season. The team attracted the most crowd in July 1998, the team played against New York Yankees and was watched by more than 43, 500 fans. The team signed manager Lou Piniella in a four-year, $13 million contract. He was the third manager to coach the team. Some of the players from Tampa Bay Devil Rays who have reached the hall of fame include Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Al Lopez, and Monte Irvin. The home park of the team is Tropicana Field. This domed stadium has a seating capacity of 45, 000. The stadium was opened in March, 1990. The stadium cost $138 million and later renovated for an additional $70 million. The uniform color of the team is uniform color is black, forest green, purple, and white. The logo design is the words "TAMPA BAY" superimposed on a devil ray.
