Diamondbacks Info
The Arizona Diamondbacks is a professional Major League Basketball team. The team is based in Phoenix, Arizona. The team is one of the five teams in the Western Division of the National League. The team gets its name from the poisonous Diamondback rattle snake that is found in the Southwestern US. The team was formed in 1998 under the national league expansion. Another major team which came into existence during that time was Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Arizona Diamondbacks paid MLB a $130 million expansion fee. Following which the team had to pay $34 million to shortstop Jay Bell for next four years, baseman Travis Lee was paid $10 million for four seasons and $2.9 million over two years for catcher Jorge Fabregas. The franchise was with an investment group headed by Jerry Colangelo, owner of the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association. The team’s first manager was Buck Showalter and the team played its debut game in April 1998. The team had a poor start and finished last in its division. The team posted a win-loss record of 65-97. In its debut season the team lost nearly 100 games, the team then invested nearly $87 million to sign free-agent starters Randy Johnson, Todd Stottlemyre, and Armando Reynoso. They helped the team to win more than 100 games. The team won the Western Division National League. In the playoffs the team was defeated by the New York Mets in the final round. In 2000, the team acquired veteran pitcher Curt Schilling from the Philadelphia Phillies and managed to finish in the third position and missed the post season. The 2001 season saw the team winning against the St. Louis Cardinals (3-2 in the NLDS), the Atlanta Braves (4-1 in the NLCS) and advanced to the to the World Series where, in one of the most exciting series ever, they beat the reigning champions, the New York Yankees, 4 to 3, to become the youngest expansion franchise to win the championship. The home stadium of the team is Bank One Ballpark, it is located in Phoenix, Arizona. The stadium was opened in March 31, 1998. This giant stadium was built at a total cost of $349 million. It has a retractable roof, one of only a few stadiums in the United States to have one. In 2001, the park saw a historical moment happen, when the Diamondbacks won Game 7 of the World Series against the New York Yankees. The color of the uniform of the team is purple, teal, black and some Orange. The team's winnings include three Division Titles, one National League pennants and one World Series championships.
