The Seattle Mariners provided the city a permanent professional baseball team in 1977, with their inaugural season coming eight years after the Seattle Pilots played at Sicks Stadium for one season and moved to Milwaukee afterwards. Ken Griffey Jr. helped to put the franchise on the map in 1991, when he led the Mariners to their first winning season as a 20-year-old. After spending the first 14 years of franchise history owning losing teams, Seattle became used to winning rather quickly. Under manager Lou Piniella and with stars like Edgar Martinez, Alex Rodriguez, Jamie Moyer, Randy Johnson and Jay Buhner going in and out of the system, the Mariners won two pennants in the 1990s, and continued their success in the new millenium. Piniella's squad would go on to win at least 91 games in the first four seasons of the 2000s, including a record-tying 116 games in 2001. Age led to a sharp decline in performance in 2004, but that didn't stop Ichiro from breaking George Sisler's 83-year-old record for hits in a season, racking up 262 hits. With a reloaded lineup that includes Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson, the Mariners are gearing up to get back into the playoffs.
