Twins Info

The Minnesota Twins is a professional Major League Baseball team. The team is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twins was a member of the Central Division of the American League. The team was formed in 1894. The team was originally known as Kansas City Blues from 1894 to 1900. In 1900 the team moved to Washington and was known as Washington Senators from 1901 to 1960. For the next two decades 1910s and 1920s the team lineup consisted of some of the best players included Walter "The Big Train" Johnson. He helped the team to win the 1924 World Series. The Twins made its first appearance in the Junior World Series in 1932. In 1960 Calvin Griffith moved the team to green pastures and the team moved to Minnesota, here the team was renamed the Twins for Minneapolis-St. Paul, the Twin Cities. In the 60s decade the Twins reached the playoffs three times. The Twins won their second World Series defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987. In the following season the team posted a 91-71 record and finished second in the American League West because the Oakland A's produced an incredible 104-58 record. Prior to 1982, the team played its games at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, a suburb south of the Twin Cities. Minnesota’s third base coach, Tom Kelly, became manager in 1986 and turned the Twins into World Series champions in 1987. In the following season the team made a big blunder when they traded their best pitcher, Viola, to the New York Mets on July 31, in exchange for five young pitchers. With a lack of pitching depth, the Twins had few alternatives other than dealing Viola for what could turn out to be the nucleus of their pitching staff for years to come. In the deal, the Twins acquired a proven, 28-year-old veteran, Rick Aguilera, heralded rookie southpaw David West, considered to be the Mets' top prospect, rookie right-handers Kevin Tapani, a starter, and relievers Tim Drummond and Jack Savage. In 1991 the Twins had a tough time defeating the Atlanta Braves to win the World Series. Currently the team is owned by Carl Pohlad and the team is known as "Twinkies" by their fans. The home stadium of the team is Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The arena is a domed sports stadium in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Metrodome features a distinctive air-suppored fiberglass roof, a 23' canvas fence in right field, and the liveliest artificial turf in the Major Leagues. Some of the major winnings of the team include six Division Titles, six American League pennants, one Western League pennants and three World Series Championships.
