White Sox Info
Founded by Charles A. Comiskey, the Chicago White Sox occupy the South side of Chicago, where they played since 1901. They are a charter member of the American League, which was founded in the same year, and won the first title in league history. Five years later, the Sox won their first World Series title, defeating the cross-town rival Cubs in six games. The 1906 White Sox were dubbed “The Hitless Wonders,” as they only batted .230 as a team, but pitching wins championships and pitching is definitely what they had. Ed Walsh and Doc White combined to win 35 games while both posting ERAs under 2.00. Chicago had one of the most successful organizations in the early 1900s, posting winning records in 16 of the first 20 seasons. The addition of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson from Cleveland boosted the Sox to another title in 1917. However, he became a central figure in a scandal in which many members of the White Sox threw the 1919 World Series. He and seven other members of the team were banned from baseball for life after intentionally losing to the Cincinnati Reds. The White Sox have not won a World Series since, but have come close on a couple of occasions. After being stuck behind the New York Yankees throughout the 1950s, the White Sox finally broke through in 1959. Built on speed, defense and pitching and featuring Hall of Famers Nellie Fox, Luis Aparicio and Early Wynn, the team nicknamed the “Go-Go Sox” won 94 games and made it to their first World Series in 42 years. Unfortunately, they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. In 1983, Tony La Russa led the “Winning Ugly” White Sox to a record regular season, in which they won the AL West division by a record 20 games. However, their season was cut short in the ALCS by the Baltimore Orioles, who would go on to win the World Series. Today’s White Sox fans have the privilege of seeing the best player to ever play on the South Side – Frank Thomas. Thomas is the franchise leader!
in doubles, home runs, RBI, walks, slugging percentage, and will take over the Sox record books in runs in 2005. The White Sox play in U.S. Cellular Field, formerly named New Comiskey Park or Comiskey Park II. It has been their home since 1991; previously, they called Comiskey Park home from 1910 to 1990. Recent renovations have included the removal of the top eight rows of the upper deck, the addition of a “party patio” behind center field, and a FUNdamentals center for kids behind left field. The removal of the upper deck has been associated with the increased amount of home runs hit at U.S. Cellular Field, with a greater amount of Windy City breeze pushing a lot of fly balls into the seats.
