Boston Speedway
Now known for its NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and ARCA events, South Boston hosted seven touring series events in 2002, many of which exposed fans to different forms of racing. All seven of these events were televised on national television, another first for the four-tenths mile oval located in the heart of Halifax County.
In 2002 Frank Deiny Jr. captured the Textilease Late Model Championship with Bill Moshenek claiming the Limited Sportsman title. Jesse "Doodle" Lang in the final year of Super Stocks took his first track championship, while Augie Saccoccio claimed his second Pure Stock Championship.
Before the dust settled on the 2001 season, the Speedway took on a new name-Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway, as Big Daddy's BBQ sauces and spices attached its name to the track. Fans visiting the Speedway could now enjoy Big Daddy's tangy sauces on their favorite concessions, including South Boston's bologna burgers, made famous by NASCAR Winston Cup Series star Elliott Sadler. (Who ate a whopping 16 bologna burgers in one night!)
Although South Boston took on a new name, the exciting racing action it is known for only got better. The 2001 track champion, Brandon Butler of Richmond, went on to win the 2001 Atlantic Seaboard Regional title, and for the first time South Boston hosted a Late Model Stock Car regional champion.
