Celtics Info
The Boston Celtics is a National Basketball Association team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The team was founded in June 1946. The Celtics is the franchise that has won most championships in the history of the NBA. In the 1980s, the team enjoyed an intense rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers. It is the only team besides the New York Knicks to be members of the original National Basketball Association and still be in their original city. The New York team is referred to as the "Original Celtics." The Boston Celtics have won 16 NBA championships since the team was founded in 1946. The team won eight consecutive championships from 1959 to 1966. The team was the brainchild of Walter Brown and he hired the services of John "Honey" Russell as his first head coach. The team played their maiden game on November 5, 1946, against the Chicago Stags. The debut match was witnessed by 4, 329 fans. The Stags defeated the Boston 57-55. The inexperienced team worked their way up and in the next year managed to make to the playoffs with a 20-28 record. In the first postseason game the Celtics lost the first game to the Chicago Stags, but came back to beat the Stags, 81-77, in March 1948, to claim the franchise's first-ever playoff win. Their playoff hopes were however short-lived, as the Stags eliminated the Celtics two nights later. In the 50s, the head coach of the team was Red Auerbach. In April 1950, the Boston Celtics drafted black player Charles Cooper to the team. In 1965-66 season, the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Celtics winning 18 games from a total of 21. In the 70s, the team was back in a better form with a few new faces in the team. The new players included center Dave Cowens. Forward position player John Havlicek, Don Nelson, Don Chaney and Jo Jo White, a pair of 24-year-olds, who provided both defense and scoring at the guard positions. During the 1980s, the Celtics appeared in five NBA Finals, winning titles in 1981, 1984, and 1986. The head coach of the team was K.C. Jones and the team had some of the prominent players including forward position player Kevin McHale, center Robert Parish and forward Larry Bird, Bird was three-time NBA most valuable player. He retired from the team in 1992 and another important player of the team Reggie Lewis died of heart attack in 1993, all this was a great loss to the team. The uniform colors of the team are green and white and the logo design is a Leprechaun leaning on a shillelagh twirling a basketball. The home stadium of the team is TD Banknorth Garden (formerly Fleetcenter). The stadium was inaugurated in 1995 and has a seating capacity of 19, 600. The stadium has been visited by more than 20 million people. The arena is a multiple one and has been used to host world-renowned concerts, sporting events, family shows, wrestling and ice shows.
