Clippers Info

The Los Angeles Clippers joined the NBA under the expansion program along with Portland Trail Blazers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The team was formed in 1970. The team has been known as the Buffalo Braves from 1970 to 1978 and the San Diego Clippers from 1978 to 1984. The first head coach of the team was Dr. Jack Ramsay. Under Jack's guidance the team finished the 1970-71 and 71-72 seasons drastically bad, 22-60. In 1972, the team had a prominent player Center Bob McAdoo on the roster. In the first year of joining with the team, he won the rookie of the year award. An avid shooter, Bob led the championships for consecutively three years, each year averaging more than 30 points per game. He also won the NBA most valuable player award in 1974. The team moved to San Diego, California for the 1977-78 season. There the team played under a new name the San Diego Clippers. The new name was given by the new owner of the team, Irv Levin. In 1978-79 season, the team posted a 43-39 win. The 1980s lineup consisted of some of the most talented players on the roster including guard Norm Nixon, centers Swen Nater and Bill Walton, as well as forwards Tom Chambers and Terry Cummings. In 1981, once again the ownership changed hands and this time the team was bought by Donald T. Sterling. The team struggled hard but could not make it into the playoffs. This drastically affected the attendance and Donald decided to move the team to Los Angeles in 1984. In Los Angeles the team's arena was the LA Sports Arena. At the arena the team posted a 107-105 win, defeating the New York Knicks. The team played in the LA Sports Arena for 15 seasons. In the beginning of 1990s the team was under the guidance of Coach Larry Brown. In his first year with the team, he led the team to finish the season with a winning streak, 45-37. Two promising players in the team included Danny manning and Ron Harper. These two players helped the team reach the playoffs once again after 12 years. The following year the team again reached the playoffs. The uniform color of the team is red, white and blue. The logo design is red script Clippers, alternatively, blue letters "LA" intertwined, red "C" superimposed. The home stadium of the team is Staples Center. The stadium has a seating capacity of 17, 500. The stadium opened in October, 1999.
