Hawks Info
The Atlanta Hawks is a National Basketball Association (NBA) team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The team was founded in 1946 and was a member of the National Basketball League, later joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1949. The team was formerly known Tri-Cities Blackhawks from 1946 to 1951, Milwaukee Hawks from 1951 to 1955 and St. Louis Hawks from 1955 to 1968. The team was based in Moline and Rock Island, Illinois, but later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and St. Louis, Missouri, before settling down in Atlanta. At a given time the Atlanta Hawks was one of the best team of the 50s and 60s decade. The 50s team had some of the best players on the rosters including Bob Pettit, Cliff Hagan, Ed Macauley, and Lenny Wilkens. In 1957, St. Louis swept the Lakers in the Western Division Finals and made place for the team in the final game, 143-135, in double overtime. The team reached the NBA Finals for the first time and won the game 126-124 defeating the Boston Celtics prevailing in double overtime in the seventh and final game. At that time the team was under the guidance of Coach Alex Hannum. Game 7, which was played on Saturday, April 13, was one of the most memorable contests in the history of the NBA. For the next few years the team remained in the limelight and once again in 1959, after winning the Western Division title for the third consecutive year, reached the finals and had to face the Boston Celtics. In the final seven games, three games 1, 3 and 5 were won by by Boston and games 2, 4 and 6 were won by the Hawks. However, in the final game the Celtics gave the Hawks a hard time and won the game 122-103. In the 60s, the team managed to reach the division titles five times. In 1967-68 the team ownership changed hands and was bought by "Thomas Cousins" and former Georgia governor Carl Sanders. They moved the team to Atlanta. In the 70s, the team did not show up much. It was the 80s that the team once again came to limelight when Dominique Wilkins joined the team. He led the team in the league averaging 30.3 points per game. In that period of time the Hawks managed to win more than 50 games in each of four straight seasons, from 1985-86 to 1988-89. In 1988-89, the team was expecting a lot from Moses Malone. He joined the team as a free agent, but the expectations shattered when Kevin fractured his left foot and was out on the benches for the rest of the season. In 1993, Wilkens joined the team as the head coach and it was under his guidance that the tied a franchise record with 57 wins, during the 1993-94 season. In March 1994-95 the Hawks recorded a 74-68 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers and the head coach Wilkens became the first coach in NBA history to post 1,000 wins. The uniform color of the Hawks is Red, black and gold and the logo design is a red and black hawk clutching a basketball in its talons, with "Atlanta Hawks" above the hawk. The home stadium of the team is Philips Arena. The arena has a seating capacity of 21, 000. The Atlanta Hawks is owned by Time Warner who bought the team in 2001 for $184 million. The head coach of the team is Mike Woodson. Under the community care program the team organizes a Reading Corner, which helps young people develop a life-long love for reading.
