The New Orleans Hornets is a National Basketball Association team. The team is based in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. The team was drafted in 1988. The Charlotte Hornets joined the NBA in time for the1988-89 season as part of the league under the expansion program. Charlotte joined the league in April 1987, along with Minnesota, Miami and Orlando. The team was earlier known as Charlotte Hornets from 1988 to 2002. The team was owned by George Shinn and he hired Carl Scheer as the general manager of the team. Dick Harter was the Hornets' first head coach. The team played its first game in October 1988. Kelly Tripucka led the team in the debut game. He was the leading scorer in the team for the next two seasons. Another prominent member of the team included Rex Chapman, he was a sharpshooter. In 1990 season head coach Harter retired and he was replaced by Gene Littles on January 31. Even under his guidance the team failed to show any performance and finished at 19-63. In 90-91, the team made a new draft in the team Kendall Gill. The Hornets won the 1991 NBA Draft Lottery, which gave them the first overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft. The team selected forward Larry Johnson, the College Player of the Year from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He also won NBA rookie of the year. Kendall Gill led the club in scoring, with over 20 points per game. In 1992-93, the team won the second pick in the draft, using it to draft center Alonzo Mourning from Georgetown. The next few years were disappointing for the team as the team's top players were on the injury list, although the team managed to reach the 94-95 playoffs but was defeated by the Chicago Bulls. Charlotte was one of the NBA's better teams in 1994-95. The team managed to achieve the first 50-win campaign in franchise history with a 50-32 mark. The next season was even a better one and Rice finishing sixth in scoring and earning all-NBA third team honors. The 2000 season had a very strong lineup which included Davis, Wesley, Mashburn, and Brown. In 2002, the team was given to permission to move to New Orleans and there the team changed names from Charlotte Hornets to New Orleans Hornets. The uniform color of the team is teal blue, purple, and gold. The logo design is a teal blue hornet with an "H" on its stomach holding a gold basketball. The home stadium of the team is New Orleans Arena and has a seating capacity of 18, 500.
