Jazz Info

Utah Jazz is a professional basketball team associated with the National Basketball Association. The team is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The team was formed in March 1974, under the expansion program. The team was earlier known as the New Orleans Jazz from 1974 to 79. The New Orleans Jazz became the 18th member of the NBA in return for a $6.15-million expansion franchise fee. The lineup included E. C. Coleman, Bud Stallworth, Walt Bellamy, Stu Lantz, and Maravich. The team was under the expert guidance of head coach Scotty Robertson. In the first season, New Orleans was defeated by the New York Knicks, 89-74. The team had its first victory after defeating the Portland Trail Blazers in November. The team fired coach Robertson and hired Breda Kolff as head coach. The team ended its 74-75 season with a 23-59 record, were last in the Central Division and 37 games behind first-place Washington Bullets. In January 1978, Maravich injured his knee while making a between-the-legs pass, thereby robbing the team of its most potent offensive force. He appeared in only three games for the rest of the season. With the end of 78-79 season the franchise owner planned to move the team to Salt Lake City, Utah. This planning raised a lot of controversy. The head coach of the team was Tom Nissalke at that time. In 1980, the team drafted Darrell Griffith from the University of Louisville. Griffith, a 6-4 guard, was both a high-flying slam dunker and a deadly three-point shooter. In 1983-84, the Jazz conquered its first-ever playoff berth by winning the Midwest Division. The team needed five games to get past the Denver Nuggets in the first round, but then fell to the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Semifinals. The 87-88 lineup was an energetic one and landed the club in a 47-35 record, which was the best in club history at the time. In the 1992-93 season, the team failed to win at least 50 games for the first time in five years. Some of the prominent players of the team were missing including center Mark Eaton, who was missing for 18 games. The team finished in the third place in the Midwest Division. The team had to move out of the playoffs after being defeated by the Seattle SuperSonics. In the 1992 Olympic Dream Team the Jazz teammates' shared MVP honors as they led the West to a 135-132 overtime victory at the jam packed Delta Center. The uniform color of the team is purple and blue. The logo design is the word "JAZZ" superimposed over a mountain inside a gold ring with the word "UTAH" at the top. The home stadium of the team is Delta Center. The stadium has a seating capacity of 20, 000 and was built in 1991 costing $ 94 million.
