Kings Info

The Sacramento Kings was formed in 1945 as a member of the National Basketball League and at that time the team went by the name the Rochester Royals. The team won the NBL championship, during its second year in the league. Before the 1948-49 season, Rochester and three other leading NBL teams moved over to the Basketball Association of America. In 1949, the franchise was one of the 17 charter members of the new league which was formed when Basketball Association of America and National Basketball league merged. The team posted a 51-17 record in the NBA's inaugural 1949-50 season, but was defeated by the Fort Wayne Pistons in the playoffs. The team was under the guidance of Les Harrison. The lineup included Davies, Bobby Wanzer and Arnie Risen, who helped the team finish ninth in the league in scoring at 16.3 points per game and hauled down 12.0 rebounds per contest as well. In the following season the team finished at the second position in the Western Division and defeated the Pistons, the Minneapolis Lakers and the New York Knicks in the playoffs to win the NBA championship. The NBA introduced the 24-second clock during the 1955-56 season. In 1960, the team drafted Oscar Robertson who later won NBA rookie of the year honors after leading the league in assists (9.7 per game), finishing third in the league in scoring (30.5 points per game) and averaging 10.1 rebounds per game. In 1963, the team made a place for themselves in the Eastern Division Finals, where the team lost seven games to the Boston Celtics. The following season Jerry Lucas joined the team and the Royals posted a franchise-record 55 wins. These wins were sufficient for the team to make them reach the playoffs, but in the playoffs the team lost to the Celtics in the Eastern Division Finals. The team changed coaches and former Celtics star Bob Cousy was made the head coach. Just before the start of 1970-71 season, the team's ownership changed hands and the franchise was bought by a group of ten Kansas City businessmen, who paid $5 million for the team. In March 1972, the club played its final game as the Royals, felling the Cavaliers in Cleveland. At season's end, the Royals headed west and here the team was renamed as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. The 72-73 season, was a disastrous one for the club as the team finished in last position in its division. Four seasons later the team began playing home games solely in Kansas City and were renamed the Kansas City Sacramento Kings. The team lineup had a prominent player on the charts, guard Phil Ford, who was named rookie of the year. He helped the team to reach the playoffs during the 1978-79 season, under head coach Cotton Fitzsimmons. In 1983, the team ownership again changed hands and was bought by a group of investors from California and the franchise moved to Sacramento in 1985. The uniform color of the team is purple and black. The home stadium of the team is ARCO arena.
