The head coach of the team was John Kundla, who was earlier working with the University of Minnesota. The rating of the team improved a lot after Mikan joined the Lakers. Mikan paced the circuit in scoring during the regular season with 21.3 points per game and was tops in postseason play with an average of 24.4 points per contest. In 1958, the team drafted Seattle University star Elgin Baylor who later received the rookie of the year award. He led the team to the NBA finals the following year, but they were defeated by the Boston Celtics in four games. In 1965, the team was sold during the off-season, Bob Short sold the club to Jack Kent Cooke. Cooke paid $5 million for the team. In 1971, the team was under the guidance of Head Coach Joe Mullaney. In 1971-72, the Lakers' posted a win of 33-games, setting a professional sports record for consecutive wins. The team signed Cazzie Russell, who played only 40 games and then suffered a knee injury, which limited his play and he was sent put on the injury list, in 1975. In 1984-85, the Lakers managed to reach the NBA finals after defeating Phoenix, Portland and Denver Nuggets. In the final playoff the team had to face the Boston and was defeated with a huge margin 148-114, a contest remembered as the "Memorial Day Massacre." This was the ninth time that the Lakers had met Boston in the NBA finals. The team hired former Chicago Bulls head coach Phil Jackson, in 1999. In his first year of joining, he led the team to the NBA finals. In the finals the team defeated the Indiana Pacers. This win was repeated in the 2001 season once again, winning a record 15 out of 16 playoff games and defeating the Philadelphia 76ers in the final in five games.
