The Dallas Mavericks is a National Basketball Association (NBA) team based in Dallas, Texas. The team is owned by Mark Cuban. The NBA granted an expansion team franchise to real estate developer Donald J. Carter. The team had to pay a hefty amount of $12 million as entry fee to the play in the 1981 NBA championships. The Mavericks hired Dick Motta as the club's first head coach. The team's first draft was after seven years of formation in 1987. They included talented players such as guards Rolando Blackman and Derek Harper; forwards Mark Aguirre, Detlef Schrempf, and Roy Tarpley and center Sam Perkins. The team tasted their first winning season in fourth year of formation. The Dallas posted 43-39, making their pathway to the playoffs. The team defeated the Seattle SuperSonics and advance to the conference semifinals before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers. With a solid lineup of Aguirre, Blackman, Harper, Perkins, and center James Donaldson on the charts the team won 55 games in the 85-86 season and the team was on the first position on the Midwest division. In the 1986-87 season the team posted a best-ever 55-27 record and won the Midwest Division. In the same season the head coach of the team retired and he was taken over by John MacLeod. In February 1987-88 the Mavericks ran off a club-record 11-game winning streak. On February 24, during the sixth game of the streak, Blackman scored his 10,000th career point. With Aguirre on the rolls for sixth consecutive year, he helped the team in scoring 25.1 points per game. Tarpley won the NBA Sixth Man Award by averaging 13.5 points and 11.8 rebounds. The team reached the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 1988. For the next four years the team failed to perform up to the mark and once again in 1992 the team was rebuilt with a few new drafts. The team was on the winning spree when Jackson signed in with the team in March. He played in the seasons last 28 games, averaging 16.3 points. In the last 21 games Johnson helped the team to a 7-14 record, including two straight victories to close out the year and finish at 11-71. In the next year 92-93 the team won only 13 games. In the next two years two prominent players joined the team, forward Jamal Mashburn in 1993, and guard Jason Kidd in 1994. But both of them reached the injury list and were out on the benches. All this led the Mavericks general manager Don Nelson to strike a deal, in that deal nine-player transaction took place with New Jersey Nets, it was the largest in NBA history. In the 2000-2001 the team The Dallas set a franchise record for 57 wins in a season, becoming one of four teams in the NBA to post consecutive 50-win seasons. Uniform colors are midnight blue, white, blue, and silver. The logo design is a horse's head superimposed over a basketball. The home Arena of the team is American Airlines Center. The stadium has a seating capacity of 18, 000.
