New Jersey Nets, a professional basketball team and is one of the 11 original teams of the American Basketball Association. The original team was formed in 1967 and was earlier known as New Jersey Americans from 1967 to 1968 and New York Nets from 1968 to 1977. The team was owned by Arthur Brown. The team was originally formed to play in New York but after failing to play in the city arena the team played at the Teaneck, New Jersey. The first head coach of the team was Max Zaslofsky. The team played its debut match in October 1967 against the Pittsburgh Pipers. The game was started by Yogi Berra and the match was attended by more than 3, 000 fans. In the next season the team ownership changed hands and the team was bought by Roy Boe. The next season Nets finished with a 39-45 record and reached the playoffs for the first time. At the playoffs the Nets was defeated by the Kentucky Colonels in a tough competition but the Nets fell, four games to three. The head coach of the team was Coach Carnesecca, who guided the team to a 40-44 record and a third-place finish in the ABA's Eastern Division. In the finals the Nets was defeated by the Virginia in the first round. In 1973, the team drafted forward Julius Erving who led the team to win the regular season and later the American Basketball Association title. He was also won the league's most valuable player (MVP) award. After suffering a defeat in the 75 season, the Nets returned in the 1975-76 season with a 55-29 win-loss record. In the next season the ABA folded up and NBA came into existence. In 1978, the team ownership changed hands. In the 80s, the drafted Mike O'Koren who was the sixth pick and center Mike Gminski for the seventh selection. The 83-84 season the Nets team was one of the best in the league and the lineup consisted of center Darryl Dawkins, forward Buck Williams, and guards Otis Birdsong and Michael Ray Richardson. The team posted a 45-37 record in the regular season and defeated the 76ers in the first round of the playoffs. In the finals the team was defeated by Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The 1995, season saw the team in a new form after a few new drafts and the lineup consisted of Kendall Gill, Kerry Kittles, Stephon Marbury, Keith Van Horn, and Jayson Williams. The team once again reached the playoffs in 2001, but was defeated by Los Angeles Lakers. The uniform color of the team is midnight blue, white, red and silver. The logo design is a blue shield with the word "NETS" above and a basketball below, going through a hoop. The home stadium of the team is Continental Airlines Arena. It has a seating capacity of 19,968.
