The Denver Nuggets is a National Basketball Association team based in Denver, Colorado. The team was founded in 1967 and is a member of the American Basketball Association. The team was known as Denver Rockets from 1967 to 1974. It was known as the Rockets for its first 7 years of existence, and the team was strong in its early years. However, the team tended to struggle in the postseason and failed to make a championship game during this span. This was very disappointing despite the fact that the team had a strong team including Byron Beck, Larry Jones Beck and Ralph Simpson. In 1969 forward-center Spencer Haywood signed with the club. In 1974, the team was renamed the Nuggets, a nickname first used by a 1949-50 NBA franchise. In the 80s the team played the in the highest-scoring game in NBA history and established the all-time single-season record for scoring average. Under Larry's guidance the team won two division titles in its first two seasons in the league but missed a third by a single game. In 1981 Doug Moe was the head coach. Moe had his own method of training and playing it was the "run and gun" philosophy, this was a different method of playing. With the introduction of this method the team was altogether in a new form. This method helped the team to be more competitive. The new team would often score more than 115 points a game. This new technique was successful but did not help much as the team failed to make to the playoffs. Only once in 1984-85, the Nuggets managed to reach the conference finals but in the finals lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. Moe left the team in 1990. In 1992-93 Dan Issel was head coach. Issel, who had spent 9 of his 15 pro seasons with Denver, in the same year, was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1994 the team was redone and was again back in a new form, in 1994 the Nuggets made history by becoming the first # 8 team to defeat the # 1 team Supersonics. In the next few years the team failed to show a winning performance, the team ended 1997-98, winning only 11 games in an 82 game season. They tied for the worst record in the NBA in 2002-03 with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The uniform color is Columbine Blue and Gold and the logo is the words "Denver NUGGETS" superimposed over a snowy mountain peak. The home stadium of the team is Pepsi Center. The arena has a seating capacity of 20, 000. The Pepsi Center was built in 1999.
