The Detroit Pistons is a National Basketball Association team. The team is based in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. The franchise was founded in 1941, in Fort Wayne, Indiana by Fred Zollner, owner of a company which manufactured pistons for General Motors. It is the oldest existing franchise in the NBA and joined National Basketball Association in 1948. In 1957, Zollner moved the team to Detroit, a much larger city that did not have an NBA franchise, the Detroit which was playing earlier in that city had folded after one season of existence. The Detroit Pistons played in Olympia Stadium for its first four seasons, then moved to Cobo Arena. The team was earlier known as Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons from 1941 to 1948, Fort Wayne Pistons from 1948 to 1957. The team has won NBL Championships twice, NBA Eastern Division Championships twice, NBA Central Division Championships five times, NBA Eastern Conference Championships four times, and NBA Championships thrice. The team had an excellent lineup including guard Bobby McDermott. The team reached the NBL championship series in its first year before falling to the Oshkosh All-Stars. In 1974, Zollner sold the team to Bill Davidson, who remains the team's owner. In 1978 former University of Detroit coach Dick Vitale took over as head coach of the Pistons. In early 1982 the team acquired center Bill Laimbeer, guard Vinnie Johnson, these two accompanied with Joe Dumars, Rick Mahorn, and Dennis Rodman formed a new lot and helped the team to reach the top league positions. In 1983, Chuck Daly joined in as the head coach of the team and guided the team to the playoffs in 1984. Coach Chuck Daly took the team to the NBA Finals three consecutive years (1988-90) and won NBA championships in 1989 and 1990. The team saw a great prospect with the draft of forward Grant Hill to the team, he helped the team to some good wins. In 1991, the Pistons finished 50-32, capturing its first Central Division title since 1990 and made it to the second round of the playoffs for the first time. In 2002-2003, the team won a few major titles including Back-to-back Central Division Champions, back-to-back 50-win seasons, back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year awards, the Executive of the Year award, the top seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs, and Eastern Conference Title Finalists and managed to finish with one of the best seasons in franchise history. The team has retired a few numbers #2 Chuck Daly, #4 Joe Dumars, #11 Isiah Thomas, #15 Vinnie Johnson, #16 Bob Lanier, #21 Dave Bing, and #40 Bill Laimbeer. The uniform color of the team is red, white and blue and the logo is a basketball with "PISTONS" superimposed upon it. The home stadium of the team is The Palace of Auburn Hills. The stadium has a seating capacity of 15, 000.
