Raptors Info

The Toronto Raptors was formed in 1995 and is one of the eight teams in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association. The team was formed under the expansion program and the franchise was granted to a group headed by Toronto businessman John I. Bitove. As part of the same expansion, the NBA allowed another Canadian club the Vancouver Grizzlies to join in. These two clubs were the league's first Canadian clubs since the Toronto Huskies competed in the 1946-47 campaign of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), the forerunner of the NBA. In May 1994, the name Raptors—from the name of a carnivorous dinosaur—was selected for the club and Isiah Thomas, a well-known former NBA player who won two NBA titles with the Detroit Pistons, was hired as general manager. The team hired former Pistons assistant coach Brendan Malone as Toronto's first head coach. The team won the right to choose the first draft under the NBA expansion plan. The Toronto Raptors drafted guard B. J. Armstrong of the Chicago Bulls. In its first season point guard Stoudamire helped the team to rank on the fifth division in the league, he also won the rookie of the year award. The team finished the season with a 21-61 win-loss record. In the following year under the NBA draft, the team drafted forward-center Marcus Camby, the college player of the year. In 2000-01 season, the team finished the season with 47 Wins and 35 Losses, but were defeated in the second round of the playoffs. The following year the lineup consisted of Alvin, Vince, Davis and Jerome Williams. The first half of the season was not up to the mark. A few prominent players of the team were on the injured list. At the end of the season the team posted 42 wins and 40 losses. The team reached the playoffs, but was defeated in the first round. The uniform color of the team is purple, red, grey and black. The logo design is a snarling red raptor bouncing a basketball. The home stadium of the team is Air Canada Centre. The stadium was built costing $265 million. The Air Canada Centre has a seating capacity of 19, 800.
