Rockets Info

The Houston Rockets is a National Basketball Association (NBA) team. The team is based in Houston, Texas. The team was founded in 1967. The team was formerly known as San Diego Rockets. The San Diego Rockets entered the NBA in 1967-68 as expansion teams along with the Seattle SuperSonics. The Rockets selected Pat Riley with its first draft pick in 1967. In the first season of playing the team posted a 15-67 win-loss record, this was a NBA record for losses. The Rockets' record entitled them to the first selection in the league's collegiate draft, and they chose Elvin Hayes from the University of Houston. As a rookie Hayes led the league in scoring with an average of 28.4 points per game and helped the Rockets earn its first trip to the playoffs in 1969. In 1971 Wayne Duddleston and banker Billy Goldberg, bought the franchise for $5.6 million. This moved gained interest of the basketball fans averaging only 4,966 fans per game in its inaugural season in Houston. In 1974, the head coach of the team was Coach John Egan. In 1975, the team reached the playoffs led by guard Calvin Murphy and forward Rudy Tomjanovich. Earlier in 1976, the club acquired Moses Malone, who was the first basketball player to advance directly from high school to professional play. With Malone, Murphy, and Tomjanovich, the Rockets won the Central Division in 1977 and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals. In early 80s the Rockets qualified for the playoffs by one game in 1981. At that the time the head coach of the team was Del Harris, who led the team winning the first three playoff series, but Boston Celtics defeated the Rockets in the finals. The team lineup consisted of Rudy Tomjanovich, Robert Reid, Mike Dunleavy, Allen Leavell, Billy Paultz, Bill Willoughby, Calvin Garrett, Tom Henderson, and Major Jones. Houston tied with Kansas City for second place in the Midwest behind San Antonio with regular season at 40-42. In the next year the team drafted Ralph Sampson in 1983 and Hakeem Olajuwon in 1984. These two tall players helped the team to the Midwest Division title. In the late 1990s the team drafted a few new players as Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen, but despite all this the could not win the championship. The uniform color of the team is blood red, white, and silver. The logo design is a gothic-style R, appearing to move upwards, with a ring around the bottom of it; one version of the logo includes "HOUSTON" at the left and "ROCKETS" at the right. The team has won two NBA Championships in 1994, 1995. The home stadium of the team is Toyota Center. The stadium has a seating capacity of 18, 000.
