Wizards Info

The Washington Wizards was founded in 1961 and was known as Chicago Packers. The Washington D.C. based team was earlier known as the Chicago Packers, Chicago Zephyrs, Baltimore Bullets, Capital Bullets and Washington Bullets, in 1974. The owner of the team Abe Pollin paid an entry fee of $500,000 to the NBA. The head coach of the team was Jim Pollard. The team played their first season in 1961-62 season in October, the team lost their match to New York Knicks 103-120, in the franchise's first NBA game. The Packers tasted their first win after defeating the St. Louis Hawks, 117-106. The team finished last in the Western Division with an 18-62 record. The team changed names from Packers to the Zephyrs. The team failed to show some action in the field and at the home stadium they recorded a 17-17 game winning loss. The Zephyrs again finished in last place in the West, with a 25-55 record. The team had two awesome players on the team charts: Terry Terry Dischinger and Bellamy. Terry was later named NBA Rookie of the Year, succeeding Bellamy as the second top newcomer for the franchise. The charts also included Rod Thorn of West Virginia and second-round pick, Gus Johnson of Idaho, who eventually became one of the best players in team history. In March 1963, the team shifted base and moved to Baltimore, it was renamed the Bullets. The new lineup included Bellamy, Dischinger, Gus Johnson, Gene Shue and Kevin Loughery. Two players from this line later went to become coaches with the team they played for. In the following season the team posted a 50-32 season in the Eastern Division. The Bullet team was the highest scoring team in the franchise history, pumping in 120.7 points per game and setting a club record with 3,925 field goals. In the 1968-69 season, the team qualified for the playoffs and the Bullets' coach Gene Shue was named NBA coach of the year. The 1975-76 Bullets team now in a better form managed to post 48-34 win loss, but failed to win the Central Division for the first time in six seasons. In the 1986-87 season, the team came back in a refined shape and finished 42-40, just good enough to make the playoffs, but lost to Detroit in three straight games. In the 1990s decade, the team enrolled two new players in the team, Juwan Howard and Chris Webber. In the forthcoming season the team owners changed the name from Bullets to Washington Wizards. The team has won only one NBA championship. The uniform color of the team is black, white, gold and black. The home stadium of the team is MCI Center. The stadium has a seating capacity of 20, 000.
