Over the past few seasons the Dolphins proved to be the team most often pointed to as the league's underachiever. They had a defense filled with pro bowl talent, led by the always tenacious Junior Seau; a good group of receivers that made Jay Fiedler play above his talent level; and they were the team that had the league's hardest working running back in Ricky Williams. Coach Dave Wannstedt had much to be proud of with a winning record in Miami after taking over from coach Jimmy Johnson, but the talent level of the team didn't seem to be quite enough to get them into the playoffs. The addition of A.J. Feeley from Philadelphia and David Boston from San Diego was set to change that this season, until the walls caved in with the shocking retirement of Williams. The team that ran the most was without a running back able to carry that load with little time left to prepare for the season. Then the second surprise befell the team with an injury to Boston before the season began. The offense has come out of the gates sputtering. The league's only real quarterback controversy in the beginning weeks wasn't between Kurt Warner and Eli Manning as many suspected, it was between Fiedler and Feeley after both had disastrous first outings. Neither quarterback appears able to take the load of the offense on their back, which put Williams' replacement, Lamar Gordon under even more pressure, until he fell to injury as well. The defense hasn't played at its standard level, the offense is spinning its wheels, and the coaching staff is asking what next. If the team can find its feet, they can certainly still contend with the Jets to be the second best team in the division, but they must do it fast before anything but last place is out of reach.
