Steelers Info
The AFC North was one of the weaker divisions in football in 2003, and experts thought 2004 looked to be more of the same coming into the season. Bill Cowher and his tough-nosed style of coaching had other things to say about the two-team race developing between the Ravens and Bengals, putting together a Steelers team that focused back on his coaching strengths, brute defense and a hard-nosed running game. The strategy was evident in Pittsburgh's season-opening victory against the Oakland Raiders, as new acquisition Duce Staley ran over the Raiders defensive line, setting up three goal line situations where Steeler hero Jerome "The Bus" Bettis put his head down and slammed into the end zone as he has done for the organization for many years. The game set the standard the 2-1 Steelers have followed thus far, scrapping the previous season's pass-first offense with Tommy Maddox at the helm and focus on the ground. The strategy keeps the defense on the field for less time, allowing them to work harder over shorter periods of time, making them much more effective. The team has seen the changing of the guard at quarterback much earlier than it had imagined, as draft pick Ben Roethlisberger was called into action in week 3 in Miami to fill in for the injured Maddox and was able to deliver the win against Miami. The running game will be Roethlisberger's best friend this season as he tries to develop into the quarterback that will lead Pittsburgh to continue the success they have found under Cowher, the NFL's most tenured coach.
